The Farish Street Community of Shalom (FSCS) has scheduled a daylong event to promote healthy lifestyles through access to health education.

“Shalom: A Day of Health and Wellness” is set for Oct. 24 in the historic Farish Street District.

Informational seminars and health screenings are planned in several areas including high blood pressure, HIV and diabetes, all major health concerns for African Americans.

The day will begin with a 5K Run-Walk/1 mile Fun Run and community prayer breakfast. Along with the health fair, will be a basketball challenge among area churches and an old-fashioned block party.

Registration fee for the 5K Run-Walk is $10 per participant, which includes a free pedometer and T-shirt for early registrants. Early registration ends Oct. 10.

The FSCS is a nonprofit community development corporation that seeks to improve the quality of life for the people primarily in the historic Farish Street District, through building community relationships, emphasizing health and wellness and promoting economic development.
