Lambuth Day celebration set
Written: 9/14/2009 The Rev. Jim Genesee will be the guest speaker Oct. 1 at the 109th anniversary celebration of Lambuth Day at historic Pearl River United Methodist Church in Madison County. The Lambuth family was a Mississippi Conference missionary family that produced 14 pastors and missionaries serving in the 1800s and 1900s. The first Lambuth appreciation day was in 1900. It was 26 years before it became an official observance and in August 1927 the day began being celebrated by the Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church. It was moved to the first Thursday in October, meeting each year except 1943-46. The historic Pearl River Methodist Church building dates back to 1843 when it housed the Pearl River Academy. A rustic, country church where electricity and running water were just recently installed, the church remains much as it was when the Lambuth family worshipped there. Genesse was appointed senior pastor of Madison United Methodist Church in June. Lambuth Day is a program of the Commission on Archives and History of the Mississippi Conference.
