U.S. soldiers get gift boxes

The love that Christmas represents to Starkville First United Methodist Church will be shared around the world this year.
After several years of providing toys to children on the Gulf Coast as a church Christmas mission project, the church decided to take part in the “Adopt a Soldier/Platoon” program. The church adopted the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division, 2nd Platoon, Charlie Company, which is serving in the deadly Korengal Valley in Afghanistan. 1st Lt. Carter Cheek, a member of Starkville First UMC, leads the platoon. The Korengal Valley is called the "Valley of Death."
Other church members currently serving in either Iraq or Afghanistan are Josh Bost, Nick Dampier and Austin Dorsey.
On Nov. 19, people gathered to box more than 50 packages to the soldiers and platoons that were adopted. The care packages were filled with more than 20 over pounds of items ranging from Chap Stick to candy canes. The packages are expected to reach the soldiers just in time for Christmas. Plans are to send boxes throughout this next year.
